The Worlds Largest Machines, In No Particular Order. Large Hadron Collider - LHC The particle physics lab CERN in Geneva, is home to the world’s most impressive accelerator of particles . In 2012 thanks to the LHC scientists confirmed the existence of the Higgs Boson particle which was first theorized by the Physicist Peter Higgs in the 1960’s, and there was no way to test their theories before the LHC. The Seawise Giant With a length of 458 meters the Seawise giant super tanker also known as the Knock Nevis, Happy Giant, Jahre Viking, Oppama, and finally Mont, was the longest ship ever built. So massive that it can fit four football fields end to end on its deck, it's so big that it can't navigating the Suez Canal, the English Channel or the Panama Canal. With a turning circle of 2 miles, just making a full stop required an additional 5.5 miles of open sea. During the Iran, Iraqi war, the giant was struck by parachute bombs and sank in shallow waters. It was later raised, repaired and served for the next 13 years. In 2010 the Seawise Giant had lived out its usefulness and made its final voyage to India where it was unceremoniously beached and scrapped for metal. The ISS has countless functions but it mainly serves as a research lab for specialized research in biology, physics, astronomy, and other -ologies , all conducting experiments in micro-gravity. It's also the perfectly place for the testing spacecraft systems and equipment for Future Mars Missions. Operating in low Earth orbit, it holds the record of being continuously occupied for over 15 years . The longest expedition on board the International Space Station was 215 days and 8 Hours. Longer than the typical resident crew's stay, which averages about five and a half months. Construction of the ISS began in 1998 as a joint project among five participating space agencies and has since been visited by at least 17 different nations of astronauts, cosmonauts and space tourists. Antonov An-225 Mriya The largest plane ever built. Sporting a ridiculously large wingspan of 88.4 m, the Antonov was completed in 1988 and named the Mriya which is Ukrainian for dream. it was first initially used to transport the Buran spaceplane to orbit. It is still in service today for commercial use, reliably and happily carrying oversized payloads. Bertha tunnel boring machine Big Bertha is the largest tunnel boring machine. Made in Japan and assembled in Seattle USA in 2013,It was specifically designed for the development of a highway to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct. With a diameter of over 17m and height as tall as a five-story building, this mechanical worm has 260 steel teeth in a head that weighs 1.7 million pounds. Bagger 293 The monster of all monsters is the Bagger 293, a giant bucket-wheel excavator made by the German industrial company TAKRAF. Taisun Crane Holding the world record for the three heaviest lifts of all time, the Taisun Crane is the world's strongest crane, with a safe working load of up to 20,000 metric tons. The crane was designed and built for the installation of very large modules in semi submersibles. NASA Crawler Transport Requiring a team of nearly 30 engineers, technicians and drivers to operate, the two NASA crawler-transporters are the largest self-powered land vehicles in the world. These workhorses have spent the last 50 years carrying NASA rockets and space crafts to their required destinations.
