The Top 10 Largest Active Volcanoes Number 10: Mt. Etna The largest active volcano in Europe, Mt. Etna, has an average of 12-15 eruptions every century. The last eruption was in April 2007. Due to its constant state of activity, there are rarely fatalities due to people staying clear of the area. Number 9: Mt. Pelee Mt. Pelee last erupted in 1902, killing more than 30,000 people. There were only 2 survivors in Saint-Pierre. Leading up to this devastating event it was found birds had fled the area days before the eruption. Researchers agree another eruption is imminent as activity increases on the volcano’s surface. Number 8: Mt. Fuji Following a 2011 earthquake in Japan, volcanologists turned their attention to Mt. Fuji. It last erupted in the 1700s but questions on the activity in Mt. Fuji remain. There is believed to be pressure building in the magma chambers but there is no way of scientifically finding out with current methods due to its depth. Number 7: Ojos del Salado Ojos del Salado is one of the tallest active volcanoes in the world at over 22,000 ft. The Smithsonian considers it an active volcano even though it last erupted 1300 year ago because in 1993 an ash cloud emerged from its peak. Number 6: Mt. Popocatepetl Located near Mexico City, this stratovolcano has a base of 16 miles and has an elevation of 17,802 ft. Nyiragongo Standing at 11,382 ft in the middle of the Virunga Mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo is Mt. Nyiragongo. This stratovolcano contains a lava lake. The lake ranges in depths from 2,000 ft to over 8,000 ft. The volcano has erupted over 30 times since 1880. It last killed over 70 people in 1977 when the lava lake seeped out of its cylindrical walls. Number 4: Mt. Galeras In Columbia, Mt. Galeras stands at 14,029 ft. It last erupted in 1993, killing a group of scientists that were inside the crater. It is an unpredictable volcano that has been active for over 1 million years. Number 3: Mt. Sakurajima Japan’s Mt. Sakurajima is almost 4,000 ft above sea level and is considered a Level 3 (which is warning level that means ‘stay clear’). January 11th, 1914 it erupted after a series of powerful earthquakes, which served as a warning to inhabitants allowing them to escape. Since 2003 there has been activity surrounding the volcano to suggest another eruption is imminent. Number 2: Mt. Vesuvius Located in the Gulf of Naples, Italy, Mt. Vesuvius is most well-known as the volcano that decimated Pompeii AD 79. 16,000 people died when the volcano erupted in AD 79, the volcanic ash cloud reached a height of over 20 miles into the air. It is considered a very dangerous volcano due to its unpredictability and the 3 million people that live around its base. Number 1: Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano in the world. It last erupted in 1984 and is said to be overdue for another eruption. It is categorized as a shield volcano, which means that it resembles a soldier’s shield lying on the ground. It may not look impressive with an elevation of 16,000 ft but ‘Mauna Loa’ means ‘long mountain’ in Hawaiian. It is 30 miles across at its widest point and 60 miles long. The volcano is primarily made up of molten rock, magma. Time for the question of the day: Did you enjoy this Top 10 Largest Active Valcanos? What top 10 do you really want to see us put out there?
