  17. There are "tallest dogs", there are "heaviest dogs" but there are no "largest dogs", especially taking into consideration BS AKC standards which don't apply to at least 70-80% of the dogs. There are always single record holders but they do nothing for the average size of the breeds. any dog over 50kg or 110 pounds is considered a "giant breed".

The heaviest breed is the English Mastiff (with one named Zorba also holding the heaviest dog record at 340 something pounds), and the tallest dog breed is the Irish Wolfhound even though a Great Dane holds the tallest dog record which is due to a genetic deformity. The AKC can state as much as it wants the "perfect wolfhound" to be a minimum of 32 inches for male dogs whole 30 inches for females with respective weights of 120 and 105. They want to "establish" a standard of 32 to 34 inches in the UK while those are 2 to 3 inches taller in the UK and Europe. And hence why "purebred" dogs have genetic disorders because they keep inbreeding them. I had 7 wolfies in 40 years, the shortest male was 38 inches with the rest about 40, and the shortest female was 35 inches. AKC gives them a life expectancy of 5 to 7 years (again the inbreeding) and my last male who weighed a lean 218 pounds at 41 inches lived until he was 11. And he was AKC registered and purebred but to my luck, he did note meet show standards, so he didn't have to be dragged from show to show (standard breeder contracts require you to let the breeder show them). I picked him at 2 months old and got him at 3, and I specifically picked the largest one, hoping that he would pass the required standards and end up a giant lapdog instead of a show dog. he was the only one I purchased from an AKC breeder though. the 4 were rescues, and got 2 from a breeder in Norway who bred them for longevity versus any BS criteria; the female lived until 14, the male until 11.
