  1. I've had a guitar for over 50yrs (you notice I say 'had' and not 'played') and I'm still crap.  I have a problem that I guess many others suffer from.  I have short fat fingers!  Not fat as in podgy, I have short fat bones in my fingers.  That makes it hard to do barre chords or stretch over 4 frets.  This is a problem without any answer.  The best I can do is play a classical guitar for the extra neck width, but what I would really like is a Strat with a wide neck, and a short scale!
  2. Guitarist Psychiatrist. Hmm. Guitarist Motivational Coach? The Front Guy in your band?
  3. I think a player has to prioritize practicing. Commitment goes a long way in establishing a steady routine {a routine as in setting aside time to practice, not playing the same thing ad nauseam}, were as motivation is a turbulent sea {comes and goes}. If you rely on motivation alone your just wasting time, with a routine you can pysch yourself up ahead of time.
  4. Just read all the comments. could'nt help noticing that nobody mentioned the word fun.
  5. Yeah I agree. When Yngwie does it, it is cool. When the other Yngwies play it is boring. He is loose with it and changes stuff around in concert and runs around like a mad man.. the other ones are tightly wound robots..
  6. how can i practice song...when i practice song my strumming is going to break & i frustrated so please sir give me tips & what to do first if i wanna play & cover song?
  7. An important part of practicing is ....Posing! If your pose is off the chicks are not going to be into you at your next gig.... it's true. Whether its my Tele , LP or classical I'm always on pose and if my playings off that night I'm still on my game :)
  8. I put on some backing track (12 bar blues any key) and start doing licks with my mouth, then pauses the video, go back to the time i did the lick with my mouth, after that i start to doing it on my guitar. Another one is just fooling around at scales and imitating the sound along with my mouth. Great video!
  9. Every time I practice I challenge myself. When I get frustrated or discouraged, I revert back to the last thing I learned and remember how challenging it was for me at first. This gives me a confidence boost, and time to relax from frustration. I prefer playing parts from songs because basic non-musical exercises bore me. When I am able to practice for longer and get a little better I most likely will incorporate exercises, but being so new I can't practice for long and naturally want to start making music. I try to balance need with want.

I've only been practicing for a few months and can play the basic smoke on the water, and Nirvana's come as you are riffs. I'm working on Johnny Cash's Hurt. I struggling with tender tips trying to hold multiple strings with the right amount of pressure, and without touching other strings. It's been a literal pain.

I've always wanted to learn how to play guitar, and now at age 32 the opportunity has become available. I am so very thankful for youtube and videos like these. Maybe one day I'll be able to teach someone myself. :)
  10. Just found you and subscribed today. I spend a LOT of time on scales and patters , but I always try to be sure that every day I spend at least SOME time playing something musical. Sometimes just coming up with some random chord progressions or putting on a backing track and improvising. Not much point in all those hours of work, if you don't actually play some music every now and then.... but I do have to make a conscious effort to do so. Nice video man.
  11. be the watcher
  12. Eric Andrea
  13. One of the most important things to learn that I didn't hear you mention is developing your ear by figuring out how to play songs using a recording only -- no tabs, no sheet music, no youtube videos. I'm talking about first figuring out the chords, then the specific voicings and strums, riffs, solos -- all just using your ears and your guitar. You need to be learning some guitar skills, theory and ear training at the same time you do this. If you've struggled for a while on your own with a song, it's not a bad idea to then check out a video on how someone else has played it, but you miss out on a lot of learning by going immediately to having someone spoon feed the answers to you.
  14. Anytime I'm running through my scales I use a random number generator to pick the tempo, seems to keep it interesting.
  15. go check out shakey grave
he plays different but such sweet sounding music.
  16. Is there any doubt that this guy is a worship leader at a cool contemporary church with a coffee shop in the lobby? Not that there's anything wrong with that.
  17. How would you advise a guy who played (violin/Guitar) , stopped kinda cold turkey 20 years ago, and now has just gotten back into guitar like an obsessed maniac? Not going to go pro, but want a goal. I can play all kinds of licks with skill and passion...but I need some sort of structure. Anything?
  18. You're definitely right. I'm always practicing exercises but never songs. Thank you!
  19. I actually recently started practicing 15 minutes of the boring scales and exercises before I practice and it seems to be helping. Then I usually try and learn a new riff like Snow RHCP or something challenging before I start going over easy songs that my band covers.
