Since its introduction, the company has introduced myriad other models varying in size, caliber, sighting arrangements and whatnot. But the 17 soldiers on. Unless you’re a diehard devotee of a 19, a 20 or a (insert favorite model number here), the 17 is probably what most folks think of when they think of Glock. Obviously, on a pistol this successful, any major “reimagining” is going to be out of the question. Nobody’s going to radically mess with the monumental popularity enjoyed by Glock. Presumably, the “99” was to indicate that it was a weapon for the dawn of the new century. As the latest service pistol design of Carl Walther GmbH, the P99 had a distinguished heritage dating back to the P.38, the standard German sidearm during World War II. Between the two pistols, Walther produced the P5, which was basically an updated P.38 designed to meet German police specifications, and the P88. The P88 retained many characteristics of the P.38 and P5 but incorporated a double-stack 15-round magazine. I owned a P88 and, like most owners, was very impressed with its accuracy. However, the P88 was only in production for a few years before being replaced by the P99, which is a substantially different design. The gun is big. No other word for it. And heavy (actually that is one more word). But big and heavy make for a soft shooting, accurate and dependable 9mm duty or military style pistol. Mine, which eventually became my daughter’s, and eventually became somebody else's we sold it to, had over 1000 rounds through it with no failures.
