Travel Trailer vs 5th Wheel

Okay not to be argumentative but in our situation I found that a travel trailer is working better for us than a fifth wheel. This video covers a lot of the information that we discussed before we decided to stay with a travel trailer. The increase in the storage area that's available in the back of the truck with a cap being utilized would all but be gone if we switched over to a fifth wheel that requires a large hitch to be placed in the bed of the truck and of course the cap being removed. So although you may not have the same type of storage considerations that we do at this point having that extra storage that is dry and secure makes a huge difference for us and we love knowing that we basically have a small garage that we tote around when we go camping. 2. We've had a fifth wheel and currently have a pull behind trailer. Although I liked the shorter overall length of the pickup/5th wheel combo and it towed very nice, in the end, a pull behind trailer suits us better for the reasons you outlined. One additional reason you didn't mention is truck size. We currently have a 1/2 ton pickup. Except for a couple of rare trailers, towing a 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton pickup is out. There are a lot more options of pull behind trailers that my F150 can handle.
  3. I told my husband that I think they are taking advantage of travel trailer buyers, who are probaly folks who don't necessarily want to buy a special vehicle with the additional tow capacity.
  4. You mentioned that demand for fifth wheels is higher, therefore they tend to cost more, which is what I was thinking. But after researching prices on used travel trailers vs fifth wheels, it seems like the better deals are with fifth wheels. I can pick up a nice 2005 DRV mobile suites for 15 grand, but the travel trailers at that price point suck! Ugh.
  5. Thanks for the video. I love having a camper shell on my truck because it keeps the snow, rain and people out.
  6. we bought an older ford excursion v10 4wd to pull our 8.5x20 cargo trailer that we converted to a tiny house. venturing out full time February 2017... it tows great, more than enough power. we purchased the sway bars, distribution hitch, brake controller and already had airbags on the rear. we have the same ideas on motorhome vs tt. if the car dies, we can have the trailer towed to a local campground while repairs or decisions are getting done. worst case, we pick up another tow vehicle and continue our journey!! keep up the videos!
  7. Nice video on TT vs 5th wheel. I have a TT setup because I have a 17' canoe on a roof rack, and I tow a 17' boat on a trailer behind my travel trailer. You can check it out at http://s1257.photobucket.com/user/SailorDon/media/TravelTrailer/IMG_8678_sm_zpskwma9m1f.jpg.html
I also keep the generator (for the A/C and microwave oven) in the bed of the pickup truck. I don't think that would work with a 5th wheel.

  9. You can get a set of wheels to pull a fith wheel with a standard hitch.
  10. Thank you, this helps
  11. I hate a fifth wheel...had two travel trailers before a 5th wheel....ate up my truck bed space and all that chucking going down the road ( with a f350) I felt like porpoise going down the road...felt like I was leap frogging at a time....I went back to a travel trailer and the ride is much smoother
  12. Every single thing you put into the bed of your truck we carry in our fifth wheel and then some. The one thing you missed though was safety. A fifth wheel is much safer to pull. I never have trailer wag on my fifth wheel. But I had it pretty bad when we had a travel trailer. Not arguing just saying. Nice video though and good channel.
  13. Thanks for the perspective!
  14. A fifth wheel is superior in every way and tows so much better and more safe. When I bought mine, I never used or even pulled my bumper pull again. I still have it but others use it now. The build quality is about double that of a bumper pull and that is where the weight comes from.
  15. Only works with a truck with more than 2k lbs of reserve capacity GVWR of at least 7000 lb.
  16. Crap, Because I admit 5th wheels can be fitted and removed as required so you can still use a conventional tailer if neede You have not included how much heavier a holiday trailer you can pull with a 5th wheel and that means bigger, I may be wrong but another video said up to twice the weight? You harp on about the storage in the rear in the trunk. So get a tent and you have even bigger space?
  17. To me, the biggest factor in deciding whether to buy a motor home or a trailer is the service aspect. With a motor home if you need major service, when you take it in, that's your home and all your possessions your leaving at the service depot. If your truck needs major service, it's just your truck your leaving and you still have your home too live in.
  18. Thanks. Helpful to someone who is just in the purchasing process.
  19. I agree to all of your arguments. People with a huge RV cannot go everywhere and they have to tow another car to be movable when they parked the RV at a campsite.
  20. I've owned travel trailers and fifth wheels in the past.  Indeed, the travel trailers are a little more squirrely than a FW, but with a proper set up and loading, a TT can provide a comfortable ride.  We recently lost our FW in an accident, and I'm replacing it with a TT.  I really want that storage space in the bed, and I want to put a boat on a rack over the truck.  A TT gives me the best option.
