World-record diver holds breath underwater for 22 minutes

How long can you hold your breath underwater? 10, 20 or perhaps 60 seconds? Well, a man from Denmark has gone far and beyond by holding his breath underwater for 22 minutes. Yes, you heard that right! Stig Severinsen managed to register his name in the Guinness World Records as the man who can hold his breath for 22 minutes. He set the record in a pool in London back in 2012. Severinsen also holds the record for the longest swimmer in cold water. Stig’s breath holding secret is known as pre-oxygenated static apnoea. This involves holding position on the surface and inhaling pure oxygen just beforehand. This process involves eliminating nitrogen and carbon dioxide , which make up over 78 percent of the air we naturally breathe. And this is why he is able to saturate his lungs with oxygen.
