WORLD'S BIGGEST TURTLE SCULPTURE

Hey guys Bill here, Have you ever noticed how many giant size animal sculptures there are in the world. From giant horse to elephants, to dogs and even reindee - they’re everywhere… One of my all time favorites is this one. It’s called the Wee’l turtle. It is a permanent fixture of Dunseith, North Dakota. Now why I like this one so much is because it wasn’t created by a world class sculptor with a big reputation. This incredible work of art was made by the guy who owns the gas station across the street from it. His name is George Gottbreht and he made the whole thing out of old automobile wheel rims from his repair shop - 2000 of them! It’s considered the world largest man turtle (or tortoise) depending on how you want to define it. The turtle stands 18 feet tall and a massive 40 feet long. The head of the turtle weighs over 1 ton. Now where George got the idea for this and why he did it, only George really knows. But my guess is the idea probably came from the fact that North Dakota is known for all it’s large sculptures… like this… and this… and this! It’s just something people do here. The other thing is the Turtle Mountains are very close to Dunseith. The other source of inspiration is no doubt his desire to get more people to stop into his gas station, restaurant and thrift shop across the street from the sculpture. Now the construction of the sculpture itself was actually tasked to artist Curt Halvorsen, so I have to say kudos’ to Curt for making something like this, look like anything close to a turtle…. If you would like to visit the Wee’l Turtle yourself, I’ve left a map link in the description box below… and now, a few more crazy animal sculptures from across the world…
