World's Largest K'nex Roller Coaster Loop (with POV)

This is the largest K'nex roller coaster loop ever constructed. The loop stands 12 feet tall and uses over 9000 pieces. The train is launched by a chain of 20 rubber bands at 40 miles per hour. The loop itself contains nearly 40 feet of track, and there are 100 feet of track in the entire roller coaster. This roller coaster was built in 10 days by Austin Granger and Sam Ihlenfeldt. Video filmed and edited by Austin Granger and Kevin Walker (http://www.KevinCWalker.com) Information: Built time - 10 days Pieces - 10,000 Track length - 100 feet Max Speed - 40 MPH Loop Diameter - 12 feet Power Source - Rubber Band Launch -Frequently Asked Questions- Q. Why is the loop perfectly round and not shaped like a normal loop? A. The ratios of the K'nex pieces do not allow for the subtle changes in curvature needed to produce the "classic" loop shape. Q. How did you get the smooth slow-motion footage? A. The camera we used is the Casio Exilim EX-FC100 which shoots high-speed video at up to 1000 frames per second. Q. Why does the track move so much during the launch? A. Two reasons. One, that section of track was not anchored to the ground like the rest. Two, that deflection is invisible to the naked eye, but when filmed at 1000 frames per second (slowed down 33 times) it is extremely obvious. Q. How did you get the POV shot? A. I attached an old point-and-shoot camera to the train with 3 cable-ties. During that shot I broke 2 of my roller coaster cars. Q. What do you do during bad weather? A. The giant A-frame supporting the top of the loop makes the structure virtually impervious to collapse due to wind. In fact, the day before this video was filmed the loop was hit by a large thunderstorm and emerged intact. Q. What are the different sized arrows for on the launch track? A. They let me know how far to pull the train back depending on how many cars I have, and how fast I want it to go. Q. What is the song? A. The song is Rods and Cones by Blue Man Group.

  14. For the POV, couldn't you have taken several takes then keep the best frames? You would have needed to have the same speed (or quite close) for each take though.
