This enormous animal is called the giant soft shelled turtle & is one of the weirdest animals in the world. It's also called the frog head turtle in the Khmer language due to its broad head. What's the difference between a turtle and tortoise? Turtles spend most of its life in water and usually have webbed feet for swimming, while tortoise are land dwellers and do not have webbed feet and prefer to live in hot, dry habitats. This funny looking turtle is a freshwater turtle that prefers slow-moving, freshwater rivers and streams and is primarily found in Asiatic countries like India, Vietnam and China, as well as the Philippines While most turtles have a hard shell to protect it from predators, the Giant Soft Shelled turtle has rubbery skin, with ribs that are fused together as a protective layer over its internal organs, and spends about 95% of its life hidden in sand or mud, with only its eyes and nose peeking out. They also have long claws, and its neck can snap out at you with lightning speed and bite you with jaws powerful enough to crush bone. David Emmet of Conservation International stated, “It has the fastest strike of any animal I’ve ever seen, including cobras.” They can grow over 6 feet in length (2m+) and weigh more than 100 pounds (50kg) This is a very rare and elusive turtle and is considered endangered, and on the verge of extinction. But there is hope, in 2007, a team of scientists discovered a nesting ground for the turtle along the Mekong delta, giving hope that this “unique turtle” can be saved from extinction.
