#1 is infamous for the asses in the seats controversy, whether or not people changed the channel from Nitro to Raw (As I didn't) that was really the moment the Monday Night Wars ended. Prior to '98 I didn't bother with WWE, and though I now recognize WCW was in decline still the was my Monday night religion. Even as a teen I was a night owl and usually watched the 1AM reairing of Nitro. Then with the buzz about Stone Cold, The Rock, DX and Mankind I started watching both; recording Raw watching that then watching the 1AM Nitro.
That night, that match, that crowd reaction, man I rewound it and watched 100x, even through the TV you could feel the energy.
I may have still felt that Goldberg was the champion of champions, that "our guy" would whoop their guy in the semi-kayfabe era of the late 90's but I knew that night that WWE was definitely the more entertaining product

Weird how almost all of the "biggest pops ever" are from about the year 2000 on, and hardly include the most successful time period in the WW...F's history (Attitude).
